| Abstract |
Interviewed by Leslie Kelen, Rose Leibowitz (b. 1908) talks about her parents' lives in Rumania, their coming to America, her father's experiences in the egg and grocery businesses, her childhood, and Jewish rituals practiced in the home. She also remembers her involvement in various organizations in Salt Lake City, including the Talmud Torah ladies, B'nai B'rith, the Traveler's Aid Society, United Way, the Welfare Fund drive, and the Jewish Relief Society (which became the Jewish Family Service). Other topics covered include the differences between the B'nai Israel and Montefiore congregations, the social "clique-isness" of the women in the Jewish community, Rabbi Cardin, the high holy days, some of the people who were "bulwarks" of the Montefiore Congregation, and Zionism. She also recalls some of the locl scandals, the anit-Semitic situation in Salt Lake schools, and the younger generation of Jewish people moving away from Salt Lake. Finally, she speaks of her involvement in Hadassah, Youth Alleyah, fund raising, blue box luncheons, USO, the Jewish Relief Society, and help Jewish soldiers during World War II. 177 pages. |

But his children carne th cheder and sunday school there. Joe Dupler's his and non-Jewish wife. She was there before he was to services. And after he passed away, you know - we were still going there -- He passed away a long time ago. She never left services on the HighHoly Days. She would be there with those children. But as it happened, her son married a non- Jewish girl. Doesn'tlive here, !understand, !heard. Andher daughters have not married Jewish men. But she is - she dones't have anythingto do with the Mormon~ church. L She did convert, you know. RA Did she?I didn't know, but she always said when her parents passed away. Shedidn't want to hurt them. LK She did. RA See, I have not been close to the congregation since Kol Ami. But I notice her name and I notice that she's always very active. She's a veryspecial lady, really. You know, at Montefoire. at Kol Nidre night, down infue vestry room, they would have candles set up there. Sothat - like people like me. I could ride to services early enough and then light my candles. There. Whereif I lit_thern at ho~e, I wuldn't getin be car and ride down. And there were alot of women who were like that.
