| Abstract |
Interviewed by Leslie Kelen, Rose Leibowitz (b. 1908) talks about her parents' lives in Rumania, their coming to America, her father's experiences in the egg and grocery businesses, her childhood, and Jewish rituals practiced in the home. She also remembers her involvement in various organizations in Salt Lake City, including the Talmud Torah ladies, B'nai B'rith, the Traveler's Aid Society, United Way, the Welfare Fund drive, and the Jewish Relief Society (which became the Jewish Family Service). Other topics covered include the differences between the B'nai Israel and Montefiore congregations, the social "clique-isness" of the women in the Jewish community, Rabbi Cardin, the high holy days, some of the people who were "bulwarks" of the Montefiore Congregation, and Zionism. She also recalls some of the locl scandals, the anit-Semitic situation in Salt Lake schools, and the younger generation of Jewish people moving away from Salt Lake. Finally, she speaks of her involvement in Hadassah, Youth Alleyah, fund raising, blue box luncheons, USO, the Jewish Relief Society, and help Jewish soldiers during World War II. 177 pages. |

Show OHI Rose Arnowitz 3-16-83 s1:7 RA Oh, before the war. Well, I was active in - [pause] No, this is a program of J-- On behalf of the men and women, the - Armed Forces, this was given to me here. December 1945. LK Yeah. s::>me of these things are really very important to what's happened in the community. RA Yes, it is. And some p- And we'd go, I remember, it was - some of the little ladies,they're gon now, all of them. That we calledon. And~me were very gracious about it. And some wouldn't even let you in the door. And it was a different thing. "My husband gave" you know. And fuey would resent it being asked. But then we stayed with it. We didn'tget too much the first year. And the next year, it always became easier. Now, the same thing happened- I was talking- theymlled me the other day from Hadassah that this year's donor luncheon - they're honoring the charter mumbers, which I happento be a charter member. And since myhsuabnd's been ill, I haven't been attending things. Andtheymlled me and asked me particularly if I wouldn't be there this year. Andit b~cught to mind the first Hadassah donor that I recommended having and wondered and said we would charge ten dollars to come to lunch at the Hotel Utah. beautiful luncheon. And the women onthe baard said, you will never get it. And so I took it upon myself to canvas about 20 women on the telepphone, asking them if we shoudldecide tohave aluncheon for Hadassah where it would cost ten dolars to come, would youcome. And I got a very favorable response out of |
