| Abstract |
Interviewed by Leslie Kelen, Rose Leibowitz (b. 1908) talks about her parents' lives in Rumania, their coming to America, her father's experiences in the egg and grocery businesses, her childhood, and Jewish rituals practiced in the home. She also remembers her involvement in various organizations in Salt Lake City, including the Talmud Torah ladies, B'nai B'rith, the Traveler's Aid Society, United Way, the Welfare Fund drive, and the Jewish Relief Society (which became the Jewish Family Service). Other topics covered include the differences between the B'nai Israel and Montefiore congregations, the social "clique-isness" of the women in the Jewish community, Rabbi Cardin, the high holy days, some of the people who were "bulwarks" of the Montefiore Congregation, and Zionism. She also recalls some of the locl scandals, the anit-Semitic situation in Salt Lake schools, and the younger generation of Jewish people moving away from Salt Lake. Finally, she speaks of her involvement in Hadassah, Youth Alleyah, fund raising, blue box luncheons, USO, the Jewish Relief Society, and help Jewish soldiers during World War II. 177 pages. |

An d as far as organizations went, there was no problem in finding taht out - whether there was such a n organization. Some of them would come through and they'd justplain say they were trying to ge a dowry together for their daughter No, she knew--Anyhow, that was her responsibility and she was given a certain amount of money to dispense. And that was a lot of criteria. When she knew her money was out for the month then you didn't have a very good chance cr getting it. And then that meant she was tied down. She was alwys available. LK Soshe was paid, wasn't she - a small percent? RA I dont think that ever bcame public or was ever known. So, that I ca't tell you. But I think she did get something. LK I heard tat she did receive a small , littl ebit compensation. OK, now during the war, you got involved with the USO. So-ou were involved with another thing mostly. Right? You the Relief Society druing the war, do you. RA Oh, they were in existnce then, yeah. LK Doyou remember the kind of work you did for them during the RA LK war? I don'tthink Iwason the baord then. Was I . I came on 1962 v No, I wasn't on bernard during the war. But now, theOLder relief society, you were on its board. |
