| Abstract |
Interviewed by Leslie Kelen, Rose Leibowitz (b. 1908) talks about her parents' lives in Rumania, their coming to America, her father's experiences in the egg and grocery businesses, her childhood, and Jewish rituals practiced in the home. She also remembers her involvement in various organizations in Salt Lake City, including the Talmud Torah ladies, B'nai B'rith, the Traveler's Aid Society, United Way, the Welfare Fund drive, and the Jewish Relief Society (which became the Jewish Family Service). Other topics covered include the differences between the B'nai Israel and Montefiore congregations, the social "clique-isness" of the women in the Jewish community, Rabbi Cardin, the high holy days, some of the people who were "bulwarks" of the Montefiore Congregation, and Zionism. She also recalls some of the locl scandals, the anit-Semitic situation in Salt Lake schools, and the younger generation of Jewish people moving away from Salt Lake. Finally, she speaks of her involvement in Hadassah, Youth Alleyah, fund raising, blue box luncheons, USO, the Jewish Relief Society, and help Jewish soldiers during World War II. 177 pages. |

Show OHI Rose Arnowitz 4-14-83 s2: 37 becasue I don't want to see-It don't think I can sell somebody, I don't want their name. And I've always been opposed. Now, so many women- Ceil Siegal is one. And I've always just critiziced her for it. She believes in hounding people for it. LK Celia. RA Yea, if I go to you and you tell me, ICbn't want to support it this year. That's enough forme. You don't have to give me reasons, a,b, or c. Why you aren't or why you don't want to. But with Ceil, she will send somebody else. And then she will call. And ben she has even gone in past years and invited a few women to lunch-,without telling them way. You know, jsut make it sound like it's a social function. Then she nails them with a ticket. Andfuen they feel like embarassed. And they feel like they have to buy it. She's even done it by inviting people to her home. For dinner. Now, how can you say no! LK I know. RA See, and that's why. If I feel somebody can be asked to donate and who will get---and then some people do. It's a matter of personality. Now, I have alady that I call on ~ery year. AQd she buys a donor ticket, I don'tknow he~to this day. I v ve never seen her-she's never seen me. But she buy s every year. I mail her a ticket, she mails me a check. LK You've never seen her.
