Show lAMA, UT Fiddlers, Wheeler Farm set date for festival & contest July 9-1 0 Bluegrass ... camping ... fiddlers ... jamming! The Intermountain Acoustic Music Association, Utah Old Time Fiddlers, & Wheeler Farm have teamed up for traditional music event. Mark your calenders for July 9 and 10. The event will bring together many longed for activities beginning Friday evening July 9 at Wheeler Historic Farm, 6351 S. 900 East, Murray, Utah. The Bluegrass Festival begins 7:30 p.m. Friday night featuring, Fire on the Mountain, The Stormy Mountain Boys and Bluegrass Conspiracy. Concurrent with the bluegrass festival- and following the small fry and junior-junior fiddle contest beginning rounds-will be a bam dance hosted by the Salt Lake Chapter of the Old Time Fiddlers in the spacious, rustic activity bam 8:30p.m. Attend one or both of these activites, set up camp and jam. Yes, motor home and "no trace" tent camping is welcome. Wheeler Historic Farm offers an ideal setting for jamming, listening, relaxing or experiencing the varied activities of a working turn of the century farm. Tent camping will be along a tree lined creek flowing through the farm. The Bonfire Picnic Area as well as many other shaded and open areas are available for jamming. The festival stage opens up to a grass carpeted amphitheater. Food and beverages to satisfy varied tastes will be available on the farm throughout the weekend. Saturday will be the Utah State Fiddle and Pickers Contest, sponsored by the Salt Lake Chapter of the Utah Old Time Fiddles. Fiddle Divisions include: Division Age Group Reg. Fee Small Fry 0-10 years $ 5 Jr.-Junior 11-14 years 5 Junior 15-20 years 10 Adult 21-49 years 10 Senior 50 years & up 10 The picking contest will include banjo, guitar and mandolin with a $10 registration fee. A jukebox contest featuring music of the jukebox era {1920s-1950s) will also be held. These contests have modest cash prizes for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place contestants, with the total purse coming in around $1,000. A trophy will also be awarded to the first place Utah resident in each division. Pre-registration is encouraged to help in event planning. lAMA pickers are encouraged to participate and show their stuff. Contests will be held in the Activity Bam intermixed with performances by the Cowdaddies, Cloggers and The Cottonwood Gang comprised of Old Time Fiddlers. Wheeler Historic Farm, the Salt Lake Chapter of the Utah Old Time Fiddlers and lAMA are committed to developing 4 Intermountain Acoustic Musician, June 1993 this event into one of national prominence. The event will be expanded to three days with a line up of local, regional, and natiional bluegrass acts as soon as next year. This year's event will open with Fire on the Mountain. This six member, acoustic country, folk and bluegrass band has traveled the world as emisaries from Utah playing for heads of state, opening ceremonies of the summer Olympic Games in Seoul, South Korea, as well as events right here at home. The Stormy Mountain Boys is perhaps Salt Lake's most sustained bluegrass band. Although they haven't been out much in recent years, they have kept their polish and will offer a good mix of original music and bluegrass standards. Bluegrass Conspiracy will top the bill.
