Show A THE 1922 FOOTBALL SEASON CROWD unusual both in ability and numbers answered Coach Fitzpatrick's call for football men prior to the opening of school in the fall of 1922. The Crimson mentor went about the task of whipping a team into shape with his characteristic precision and Utah was ready when the opening whistle for the season sounded on October 7th. The College of Idaho team faced the Crimson and the Gem state collegians gave evidence of having been grossly underrated by the local followers of the game. Reinforced by their giant fullback, Miller,, the visitors were able to give Utah one of the toughest battles of the season. The shifty Crimson team put over a win with the figure 16 to 12. The game took any over-confidence that might have existed previously, out of the Crimson ranks and served to impress them with the seriousness of the season, an effect that showed to great advantage later in their consistent season. On October 14th the Crimson team faced the newly organized B. Y. U. eleven and had no trouble in winning 49 to 0. The Provo institute was not a team to cope with the Crimson, playing first year conference ball. The game was a starter for what promises to develop into first class rivalry when once the Provo school attains maturity as a gridiron institute. The first really big accomplishment of the season was Utah's 3 to 0 defeat of the Colorado University team at Boulder on October 21st. The score is significant of the bitterness of the encounter. Colorado critics, however, were unanimous in declaring their state institution fortunate in keeping the score down. On the same trip Utah invaded Wyoming and trounced the Cowboys with little difficulty 27 to 0. Following this game they were hailed throughout the conference as likely champions.
