At the same approximate rate of increase, the population in the year 2000 should be about 4,320,000,000. The pessimist begins to cry his fear that the earth will not support this number. The optimist, on the other hand, believes that through increasing intelligence, knowledge and good will, future problems will be solved as they arise. He not only has an abiding belief in the ability of the people to manage future affairs; but more than that he tries to shape and influence conditions as to bring about certain, definite, hoped for results. A university should stand to build citizens who will be able to solve future problems, otherwise, optimists. The University of Utah is a representative community striving toward perfection. Fortunately she is not perfect, for an ideal unattained leaves something to work for, a future, the hope of which is the propelling force of humanity.
