Armstrong and Anna M., his wife, conveyed to the United States for $21,000 the southwest fractional quarter of see. 18, T. 13 S., R. 20 E., eontaininp152.40acres; also the west85 acres of BE. + of see. 18, T. 13 S., R. 20 E., containing in the aggregate 237.40 aeres. These deeds, with abstracts of title, were submitted to the Department September 30,1902. October 27 the De rtment returned them with the written opinion of the Ading Attorney-General, J. R&tliehards, rendered October 6, as to the validity of title when taxes w e r e ~ da,n d authorized the purchase of the 328.40 acres. The superin-tendent of the F askell School was instructed to have both deeds duly recorded and abstracts brought up to date. December 11, 1902, he returned the deeds duly recorded, but reported that the taxes had not been paid. January, 1903, the Department authorized the payment of $77.05 and $40 taxes, which was done. The deed from Anna Johnson was recorded in register of deeds office, Douglas County, Kans., December 10, 1902, in volume71 of deeds, page 79, and in this Office in m~seellaneousr ecord hook volume 5, page 176. The Armstrong deed was recorded in same office in Kansas 'in hook 72 of deeds, page 316, and in this Office in miscellaneous record hook, volume 5, page 177. |
