FAYNIZA . WEBRB. auarintendcnt. 001. T. A. Brxnns. [i. K Indian Agent. . Sani1a~y.-Doring the winter and early spring epidemics of maaslea and other erup-tive diaeases largely prevailed, invading the eohvol and creatiug much anxiety. The mortality, howaver, waa~amltrkshlyli ght, considering the uousual1y srvere winter. With thin exception the sanitary condition of the Indians was good, bettsr than for s e~a r asle are pafit. OURAY AGENCY. Unoompolw~e Besentation.-Thia agenoy is situated on the west bank of Green River, near the junction of t.he White and Do Chesoe Rivers, and about 35 miles 8011th of Uintah Agenay. The Unoarnpnbgre Reservation adjoius the Uiotah Reservation on the aonth end contains 1,933,440 sere8 of land, all of whioh is a desert, excepting snlall patches on the Green, Dn Chesne, and White Ri~er s ,w hich can be irrigated and used for agrioolturel purposes. Indians.-Thxs reservation is occupied by the Uncompahgre band of Ute Indisns. .A aareful oenses shows as followa: Mnlea above 18 gear8 of age.. ....................................... 831 Males between 6 and 18 years of age.. ............................... 212 Males under 6 years of age .......................................... 64 B'emales above 18 years of age ....................................... 270 Females between ti snd 18 years of age ............................... 171 Females under 6 years of age ......................................... -59 Total popolatiou .................................................. 1,007 These Indinoa are known as blanket Iudiana, and hsve bean a verr indolent and Isey class of Indians, sud believed that work waa de rading. No effort has beenmade to advanee themin t,he past, and they have been sflowed Do go on in their old way, spendmg their time in idling about the agency, gambling, horae-racing, and follow-ing the hunt. During this yearmsny of them havemanifested a desire to settle down to work if the proper facilities were afforded thsm. There is no agricultural lend on this reservation to locat,e t,he lndians that wish to farm. There isall the agrioultursl land needed for then) on the Uintah Reservation, which adjoins. On this reservation these Iudiansshould be located, where. with theexpenditure of afewthousand dollars for water ditches, I an) satisfied that I oould have the nmst of them located and working on farms. I therefore recommend that a commis~ion be appointed to treat -with these Indians for the sale of t,hia reservation and for their removal aod location on the tlftile lands of the Uintah Reservation. Little or no progress osn be made with then) until this bas been accomplished. These Inrliaua draw weekly rations, consisting of flonr, beef, coffee, sugar, and baking-powder, which previous to last aumnwr amonnted to about a half ration. Since the tronblea at that time the ration of flour and beef has been increased, in order to keep them home on theirreservation and p~event them roaming threugh , Colorarlo following t,he hunt. Agriou1twe.-A few of tfiese Indians have loonted on the Dn Chesne Rivsr, and have made s good effort at farming. They have 205 acres under cultivation, and .have raised good orops with their own teams. I have had the agenoy farmer omped with t,hem <luring the spring aud sommer, instructing them in their work. This little patoh of gooa land is all taken up, and, iu fact, it is too crowded now. Other lands are now needed on which to 1oont.a those who wish to farm. Hd.ucation.-There are no b~ohool bnildings at this agency. Many Indians have ex-pres- ed to me a, denire to send their ohildren to school, if I had aceommodstions far -them a t the agency. I arn satistied tlmt if proper sohool fsoilitie~w ere offered these Indians at their ageney, I oould build up a very succesfnl sohool. |
