CONTRACT SOHOOLS. The Indian Office avails itself of every snitable means for the edu-cation of Indian youth; and since Government appropriations are in- ' sufficient to support the pupils who are anxious to enter school, and sznce, also, Government school buildings will acoommodatc but little more than one.fourth of the number of children of school age. it has become the policy of the office to make contracts, for the education of Indian children, with religious organizations that agree to train pupils properly, and to furnish buildings suitable for their acco~nmodation. Such contracts have beeumade, notably, with the Bnrean of Catholic Indian Missions, the Boards of Home and Foreign Missions of the Pres-byterian Church, and the American Missionary Association (Congre-gational). Contracts have also been made with the Friends, Lutherans, Unitarians, and Mennonites. The Episcopalians have a large school work among the Indians, which is assisted by the Government, but in o-nly two instances in the way of formal contracts.* - - - - . -- - - -. - - - - .- - - 'Sit~cu the endof tile 6aval jenr aronrrart hne been nnade with the \\'u~nn'a Hoard of Misaiooeoi the blethudiat Chl!reh'(Nortb)fur a echo01 ia tho IadianTcrrirnrg, and w i t h the Episcopal Churoh for sONe sohaolsin Minnesota. |
