The contractor should, in all ooasea, be required to cut clean aa he proceeds, so that he makes no selection from among the trees to be out; but if any timber remains unoot, it ~houldb e in s compact body and so situated as that in the futtire i t may bbe advan-tageously logged. The Department also expressed the opinion that new coutracts-should he made ao as to provide a clean sum to tlle Iudiau for the vallle of his timber standing, and not eubjeot him to the risks of loss in any of the logging or banking operatiuns.
