SOCIAL DANCES OF LESS IMPORTANCE THAN THE BEAR DANCE TURKEY DANCE One of the principal dances of the Utes at the present time is known as the Turkey dance. This name was given the dance by white men. the native name meaning " jigging dance." The accompanying instrument is a large drum placed on the ground at the right of the entrance to the dance circle, the drummers being seated around the drum and singing as they beat upon it. Women seldom participate in this dance. The motion of the dance is forward, and the step consists in putting the feet to the ground alternately, the point of the foot touching the ground first, after which the heel is " put down with an accent."
