When she was twenty-three Elizabeth married Alfred Cummmg Alfred Cummmr was the meat erandson of Dawd Cum- ming of inverneis, Scotland, whose son William had escaped Siorland after the defeat of the Pretender, Charles Edward, in 1746 and had settled in Maryland. Wiliiam Cummmg's son Thomas and Thomas's wife Ann Ciay had settled fmi ,n the noted abolitionist Gerrit Smith; and Sarah who never married but took the name Waliace which was the name of her mother's marned sister.
