Title Genteel Gentile, preface x
Description us with photographs of Elizabeth and Alfred Cumming and has helped us to understand the Cumming family history. Permission to use the sketches of Captain Albert Tracy was given by the Manuscipts and Archives Division of the New York Public Library, Astor, Lenox, and Tilden Foundations, and photographs of these sketches, illustrations from Harper's Weekly, scenes of and home in Salt Lake City, and likenesses of Albert Sidney Johnston and Delana R. Eckels were provided by the Utah State Historicall Society. The photograph of Thomas L. Kane was furnished by the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints Information Services, and those of Brigham and Mary Ann Angell Young came from the Special Collections Department of the University of Utah Library. The originals of the letters included in this book are in the Alfred Cumming Papers in the Manuscript Department of the William R. Perkins Library, Duke University, Durham, North Carolina, and are reproduced for publication by permission of that institution. Elizabeth Cumming's original spelling has been retained throughout these letters; however, minor modifications of punctuation, such as changing dashes to periods and adding a few commas, have been made to facilitate reading of the text.
