Description 26 TWENTIETH ANNUAL REYNOLDS LECTURE Experiments with mice and other animals are helping us to understand at least some of the factors which are responsible for susceptibility and resistance to disease. Gowan and his co-workers in studying the resistance and susceptibility of mice to a form of typhoid (Salmonella typhimurium) found one of the factors concerned was the macrophage cells of the liver and spleen. In the susceptible mice these cells would ingest the typhoid bacteria, but the bacteria would reproduce in the cell until they would spill out and cause more infection. In the resistant strains, however, the bacteria were digested within the macrophage cells. What was inherited was a gene which produced an enzyme in the macrophage cells of the resistant strains of mice, which caused the bacteria in these cells to be destroyed by digestion.
