COX Lieutenant Governor January 3,2020 Jill Remington Love Executive Director Department of Heritage & Arts TOM DANSIE SPRINGDALE CLG POBOX 187 SPRINGDALE, UT 84767 Dear Tom: We are pleased to inform you that the historic property listed below, nominated by the Utah Historic Preservation Review Board and the Utah State Historic Preservation Officer was officially listed on the National Register of Historic Places by the National Park Service on December 27,2019: CHRISTENSEN, HERBERT & Lll,LIAN, HOUSE, 980 ZION PARK BLVD, SPRINGDALE The Town of Springdale should be proud of the efforts of the property owners, Joe Pitti and Mark Chambers who worked with a professional consultant to prepare the nomination. Using information they gathered, including interviews of family members who lived here, a case was made for architectural significance of the house in the context of southwest Utah. The Herbert and Lillian Christensen House, built in 1936, is locally significant in the area of Architecture as the most ornate and unique example of a period revival-style "storybook" cottage in southwest Utah. The stone and stucco cottage is a highly individualized design using a mix of English Tudor, Craftsman, and National Park Rustic inspired details. The high artistic value of the Christensen House is validated by continuous recognition of the property as the Springdale's "storybook" or "fairytale" cottage. Rather than constructing a typical period revival house of the era, the ownerlbuilder, Herbert Christensen used his skills and imagination to build a practical family home influenced by the popular culture of "storybook" architecture, also known as Provincial Revivalism. Listing in the National Register is intended to provide recognition of a property's significance. A major benefit of listing on the National Register is the availability of tax credits for qualified restoration work along with other financial incentives that are intended to encourage preservation of our historic buildings.
