Show Due to the problems of the old county hospital, plans were undertaken for a new medical center. In 1962 ground was broken for the present facility which officially opened on July 10, 1965. Patients were transported in county ambulances assisted by members of the U.S. Army National Guard and Air Guard. A short decade after this new facility opened, it was realized that it would soon become inadequate. This prompted a new set of plans and construction which culminated in the completion of the newer, clinical portion of the hospital, located to the north of the old building and connected by sky bridges. The new hospital officially opened September 22, 1981. The medical center has continued to grow. Primary Childrens was moved to its present location next to the University Hospital in 1990 as part of its commitment to education in the field of pediatrics and in agreement with the University. The Eccles Institute of Human Genetics also opened in 1990, followed by the Moran Eye Center in 1993 and the Biomedical Polymers Research Building in 1994. During this last year we have seen major remodeling efforts in the hospital and construction on the Huntsman Cancer Center. What began as a few students in two crowded classrooms has grown to a huge medical center which acts as a tertiary referral center for the Intermountain West and has provided us with an excellent education. Hopefully this introduction will give a sense of where we came from. Our theme "That was then, this is now" was meant to express this progression. Not only of the medical school and those who have participated in its development, bur also the progression that each one of us has made during these past four years. As you browse these pages now and in the future, may you remember and treasure your past while looking forward to your future, yet never forgetting to enjoy the present, for "That was then, [but] this is now." A fleet of ambulances, aided by the US. Army National Guard's 144th Evacuation Hospital and Air Guard's 151 st USAF Dispensary, transferred 93 patients from the old county hospital. The concrete "Medicine" sign is the same as on the building to the left. ft was moved in 1965 when the school moved to the new campus. -Ric Rasmussen Chief Editor References 1.
