Show The first medical school in U rah was the Medical College c' Utah. It was founded in 1880 by Frederick S. Kohler, MD from Pennsylvania and was located in Morgan City, twelv1 miles up Weber Canyon. A class graduated from the colle~, in 1882 and by 1883 the school no longer existed. At the far end of this building are the three rooms where the medical school had its beginnings. This building is now known as the Leroy Cowles Building. The University of Utah College of Medicine had its begin• nings in 1905 when Ralph V. Chamberlin, Ph.D. organizeo several classes for medical training. The school was housd in two classrooms on the second floor of the University of Utah biology building (now called the LeRoy Cowles Building, next to the Park Building on Presidents' Circle) and the first class had 47 students. Initially only a hign school diploma was needed for entrance, but in 1909 chii was changed to one year of undergraduate courses and in 1910 was changed to two years of courses. Soon more space was needed, so a gymnasium on the third floor of the museum was divided, creating a third classroom. In 1920 the medical school moved to a new building (now called the Life Science Building, just south of the present Alfred Emery Building on the opposite side of Presidents' Circle). The building originally was built as a dormitory for cavalry officers during World War I. The building was expanded in 19 3 7. This was the next home for the medical school. ft was the first building completely dedicated to medical education and is now the Life Science Bldg. Notice the "Medicine" sign over the door. In 1942 the College of Medicine was changed from a twoyear program to a four-year program. The old Salt Lake County General Hospital on 21st South and State Street was used for clinical education. The quarters were cramped, , the building was old, and it had ancient electrical and plumbing systems. A prominent local surgeon recalled" one time doing a common bile duct operation and the lights went out. I called for the circulating nurse to 'go get Chris,' who was the only electrician who knew the old circuits. Then came the horrible realization that Chris was the man upon whom I was operating. I had to bring in flashlights and we finished the operation that way because there was no standby electrical system." In response to government efforts to have medical schools supervise Veterans Administration hospitals, an agreement was made with the VA Hospital in I 946 to provide this service as long as the departments could recruit and supervise house staff and send third- and fourth-year medical students there. At the time chis was against federal regulations, but the arrangements were made and Utah became the first school to use a VA hospital. The William H. Groves Latter-day Saints Hospital was also opened in 1905. It had interns as early as 1912 and residency programs in medicine and surgery by 1944. The first efforts at an affiliation with the U of U began in 19? 1. This progressed to a strong affiliation in 197 4.
