Show here, and on the frontal side only). The paste used on this page appears to have set quickly, and strong tool marks used in smoothing it before painting are to be seen. Folio 8. This page begins on a new skin, but there is no outward trace on the Frontal side. It bears the Bodleian Library stamp. The brown spot on the surface penetrates the slight glaze and presents a dull surface in reflected light. This page is the last one in which the mineral green pigment is used on the Frontal side of the Codex. Folio 9. Commences the series of pages in which a vegetable green has been used. The surface of the paste on this page is deeply marked by spatula strokes. It was apparently very nearly dry and considerable force was used when smoothing it. Folio 10. Bodleian Library stamp. The edges have flaked and a single crack has penetrated the whole depth of the paste. Folio 11. There are fly larvae holes in the leather on the lower right edge. A smear of black on the witch broom was caused by the artist inadvertently touching the outline while it was still wet. It extends above the body colour, and is good evidence that the outlines were painted in after the body colour was dry. Folio 12. There are fly-larvae holes on the lower left edge. The paint is much worn at the upper corners. Folio 13 Bodleian Library stamp. This page is distinguished by part of a black finger print. It does not appear on the Martinez Marin edition of CODEX LAUD which was made from photographs made before 1898. This folio is traversed by a joint on the skin, but little trace of it can be seen on the Frontal side. Both this folio and folio 14 have a noticeably more matt surface than the rest of this side of the Codex. |
