" "We want to merit the quality of restoration as well as to use restored buildings ,as focus points for other projects so that .other projects have something to shoot for,:' said Michael Leventhal, executive director of the Utah Heritage Foun· dation. "These buildings are greater than the sum of their parts." Buildings to be' honored are: " • The Terry·Gile Mansion, 1229 E. South Tern· pie St., Salt Lake City. Main St. , Heber City. Built between 1887 and 1889, the building was In danger of being torn down In 1964, but residents refused to let that happen. The building was turned into a cultural and theatrical center, and in 1987 the interior was remod~led for use as a City Hall ' . J • The Kearnsli~teI,94 W. 200 South Si:, Springville. Completed In ' 1890 by Moses and Anne Kearns Johnson, the-building always bas been operated as a hotel. It has been a Springville landmark under many names - Manitou Hotel, Kearns Hotel and Ihe Valley Tavern .Hotel. The building had been vacant from 1980 to 1990, when the Craig Lott and Randall Poulsen purchased it 10 save it from demolition. • The M.L. Bigelow & Co., Inc.·Second Ward Building , 130 W. 100 South St., American Fork. The project is an adaptive use of the 1903 Church of Jesus Christ of LaUer·day Saints 2nd Ward Building, which became church surplus in 1979. M.L. Bigelow & Co. purchased the building in 1984 and has stabilized and restored the historic aspects of the building. . • Crystalwood, 1289 E. Canyon Creek Rd., restored by Bonnie and Denis Phillips and :; " transformed Into art galleries and office. : Bountiful. Crystalwood is the only building in Utah designed by Frank Lloyd Wright. A private residence commissioned by Don and Jane Strom· quist, it was completed in 1961. George Frandsen and David Carlquist purchased the house in 1989 and had it restored to specifications obtained from the Frank Lloyd Wright Foundation. • The General Engineering Building, 159 Pier· pont Ave., Salt Lake City. Built in 1906 by John Callow, the building served as the Callow family residence and as the laboratory for Mr. Callow's mining technique experiments. It also served as the headquarters for his company. In 1987, Bon· nie and Denis Phillips purchased the building and transformed it into two art galleries, an architect's office and an exterior sculptural courtyard. • The Salt Lake City and County Building, 451 S. State St., Salt Lake City. The mayor and city council have received national and state awards for deciding to undertake the project, which ·was completed in 1988. The Heritage Award will focus on the architects, engineers and craftsmen who worked to restore the 1894 Richardsonian Ro· manesque public landmark building. • The Ephraim Co.op Granary/Art Gallery, 100 N. Main St., Ephraim. The two·story vernacular stone structure was built in 1871-1872 and was part of the Ephraim Co.operative Mercantile In· stitution complex. When the cooperative system ended in the 1880s, the granary went through a variety of "misuses," and by 1969 both the grana· ry and the co·op building were threatened with demolition. In 1990 it was restored as a craft store 011 the first floor and a public meeting space on the second floor. • The Graybill Building, 541 Main St., Park City. The two·story frame structure was built af· ter the great Park City fire in 1898. The historic integrity and visual sense of this building had been hidden by incompatible renovations and alu· minum siding. The restoration of the building was based on photo documentation and now appears as it did in 1910 photographs. ••ken d uro al renovation. It has been reborn as Salt Lake Community College, 1575 S. State St. • South High School/Salt Lake City Community College, 1575 S. State St., Salt Lake City. This Crystalwood In Bountiful was restored to original Frank Lloyd Wright parameters. renovation project has given new and continued use to the 1930 South High School complex. serv· Ing as a campus of Salt Lake Community College. The project involved the 'complete upgrade of structural, electrica~ and mechanical systems . • The Honorable Mention Award will be alvard· ed to the Effie Marshall Home, 91 E. Main St. . Minersville. The story·and.a.half masonry dwell· ing was built in 1913-1914 for Elmer and ·Effie Mlfrshall. Renovation and restoration included upgrading to current codes·the mechanical , elec· tri~l and structural systems of the home, which still serves as the home or Effie Marshall. The five M~fshall daughters and their spouses attempted to :~eturn the house to its original style through memory and interviews. i ..'· 1\ ,. |
