Show 11 in the water now lined the shore and became increasingly involved. Mrs. Jovanovic was horrified. She stood on the shore yelling for her niece. She couldn't swim a stroke. She saw how close Delilah was getting to the rocky shore of the island and ran back to yet her niece's robe, grabbed it and headed for the causeway. People on the island had noticed the commotion and were watching from the balconies and windows of their suites. Directly above the point to which Delilah drifted, thirty feet above the water, a small group of men watched. Mrs. Jovanovic notice them. They stood out because they were fully dressed in dark suits and street shoes, all but one stocky man with a broad, familiar face and glasses. He sat at a table wearing a beach robe. Mrs. Jovanovic stumbled to a stop as she recognized the face whose portrait hung in every government office, market, car rental agency and bar, the face of Josip Broz Tito. As Mrs. Jovanovic stared,Tito got up from his table and walked to the balcony railing, A saited man came running up a path from a small landing on the rocks to Tito and talked, pointing down at the teeming water, at Delilah. Tito turned and spoke to the man still seated at the table and then with four of the suited men, two in front and two in back, headed down to the landing. As the first man reached the bottom Delilah drifted against the rocks in front. Mrs. Jovanovic clutched the robe tighter and navigated through the rocks to within twenty-five feet of her goal when the second man reached the bottom and seeing Mrs. Jovanovic's advance, headed her way intent on |
