Show 2 The Materials Used in S ing Oriental Paper ‘The Occidental and Oriental methods used in the sizing of paperare no unlike, but their |e<p=cuve missions have numerous technical differences the Occident a solution of size, or glue, rendered from the hides o animals,is employed for clmmg the pores of handmade paper and giving i aslight coating of a mucilaginous substance, making the sheets imperviou o iak. Tn the European method the size i applied either to the rag pul before it is formed into sheets, or by dipping the paper into the size afie e sheets are formed and dried; in some instances, to gain certain erasin qualities, both methods are combined. For writing with a metal the European manner sizing s essential, for if the paper were left unsize (waterleaf) the ink would spread as on blotting paper, a substance whic contains no sizing material In the Orient, where the brush and ink-cake are used for writ ng heav sizing is not essential. Nevertheless, the size is required for various e reasons, more concerned with the actual making of the paper than with it ultimate use for calligraphy. In Japancse papermaking the vegetable siz i a necessity in the actual forming of the sheets in the mould. It prevent the entangling of the long bark fibres and assists in producing even an uniform sheets of paper; sizing in the pulp also adds strength and a certai gloss that the paper would not otherwise posscss. Its most important use however, is to prevent the sheets from sticking together when they ar couched one upon another, as in Oricntal papermaking the sheets are no nterlcaved by felts as in the European method of making handmade pape In an endeavour to classify and arrange intelligently the variou materials used for sizing in Japan, China, and Korca the student of papermaking grows bewildered with the multitude of colloquial names cac plant scems to be known under myriad appellations.
