Show THE CHURCH REVIEW
PRESBYTERIAN
VOL. 3. / SALT LAKE CITY, UTAH, MARCH 31, 1895. / No. 14.

FIRST PRESBYTERIAN.
The testimony of the Governors, Judges, Prosecuting Attorneys and public officials generally in the prohibition states of Maine, Kansas, Iowa and North and South Dakota is so explicit and uniform as to the great success of prohibition, from a social, moral and financial standpoint we wonder that any intelligent man should call it in question. It must be that those who deny its success have not taken pains to study the evidence, for it is simply overwhelming. Nobody, however, claims that it entirely prevents the old topers from drinking. But by shutting up the saloons, it takes away from boys and youth the temptation to learn the habit. A whole generation is growing up in Kansas that never saw a saloon. And because there are no saloons, the working men are putting their earnings in the saving banks, so that Kansas is fast becoming a rich state financially and morally.
The pastor expects to start for Evanston on Thursday morning, to attend the annual meeting of the Presbytery, and will probably not be back until the following Tuesday. It is expected however that there will be services in the church next Sunday, both morning and evening.
The subject for the prayer meeting next Wednesday evening will be: The Destruction of Sodom and the importance of intercessory prayer. Genesis, 18:16-33.
The union temperance meeting in the Theatre this evening had to be given up because some of the churches had special meetings which they thought they could not postpone.
The Ladies Aid Society which meets on Tuesday afternoon, cordially invites the gentleman to come between 12 and 1:30 and take a twenty-five cent lunch with them, to help replenish their treasury for benevolent work. The thanks of the society are heartily given to the gentlemen for their generous patronage on former occasions. The business of the society will be attended to after the lunch is over. Those ladies in the congregation who are comparative strangers are specially invited to come and get acquainted.
Mr. W. S. Earls started for California last Monday on a business trip, expecting to be absent two months. After that, we hope his business will locate him permanently in this city. We greatly need him here both as a member of the church and as a man who makes his Christian influence felt as a citizen, both by speech and conduct.
Dr. Bascom's sister, Mrs. Terry from Socorra, New Mexico arrived last Tuesday, on a visit to her mother and brother, expecting to remain a few weeks.
There will be a union meeting of all the Christian Endeavor societies in the city, in our church tomorrow (Monday) evening at 7:30. This is a preparatory meeting for the convention which begins at Ogden, Wednesday evening. That lively endeavorer, the Rev. C. F. Richardson of Ogden, is expected to be present tomorrow evening.

WESTMINSTER.
Monthly meeting of session tomorrow night an 7:45 at the house of S. Williamson, 66 Quince street (off Second North street).
There will be no gathering of the Ladies Aid Society this week, owing to the convention at Ogden of the Y. P. S. C. E.
Professor Kenaston will occupy the pulpit here next Sunday morning, April 7th.
Children, get your plants and flowers ready for Easter Sunday, April 14th.
There was a pleasant reunion of many of the friends of Mr. and Mrs. Hurley last Monday at their home on the occasion of the anniversary of their wedding.
The assessment of $9.10 on this church (or 10 cents per member) for the proportion of expenses of the General assembly, should be paid to Mr. Rodda as early as possible.
Business meeting of the Y. P. S. C. E. is postponed owing to the convention arrangements.

The Christian Endeavor convention has been put forward one day. See our C. E. page for particulars.

|
