He work d through hi uncle who worked somewhere around, I don't know. Anyway, Willma wa the ecretary to the minister of the Pre byterian Church. She u ed to come in and buy her ga at my station. I can't to this day remember. . .I didn't, a the tation manager, wait on too many of the customers. I always had a crew that was hired to do that. I wa the manager, but once in a while, I'd go out and fill their tank, you know? We had a little greeting that we always used on each customer, "Good morning. Do you wish your tank filled with Supreme or Regular?" That was the official company greeting that they taught us in school. In fact, I taught new employees the very words that they were to use. She'd give me her credit card or Chevron card and I'd process it through the machine and thank her. I'd use the old Standard farewell, "Thank you and come in again." That's what I'd tell her. But my assistant manager was always looking for a girlfriend for me. He thought so much of me, he wanted to do that for me. I kept telling him, "I'm not looking for a girlfriend. I've got all the business I can handle here with you Bunkies. I don't need a girlfriend. What are you talking about, man?" This went on for a year or so. I finally got acquainted with Willma. WIN: So you finally got married up there in Yakima? WIL: Yakima. WIN: Over in apple territory. ART: Yes, there was a lot of fruit growing up there in the valley. I don't know whether you're LDS or not, but there was a little branch of the church there in Yakima. During 54 |
