Show ARTHUR A. A TLE J 1 2 0 developed atomic bomb . Several Japane e citie , including Hiro hima and Na a aki, had to be intentionally spared for this purpose. The B-29 bomber initiall flew their long mis ions unescorted. Eventually they were upported by long-range P-51 e cart fighters operating from Iwo lima.] WIN: So you were on Tinian for about twelve days after the action ended on Saipan? You'd been in combat most of the time. Where else did they send you? ART: From Tinian we then joined up with the great general of all time, Dougla MacArthur. They sent us to the island of Leyte in the Philippines. We landed on the same beach that General MacArthur did. WIN: Before he got there or after? ART: Oh, after. [Editor's note: While Mr. Astle's XXIV Corps Artillery and the US Army's 27h Infantry Division were busy supporting the Marines of Fifth Amphibious Corps (VAC) in the Marianas, the bulk of the US Army's XXIV Corps itself, as part of the Sixth US Army, was preparing for the invasion of Leyte. Those landings took place on October 20, 1944. With its artillery group still in the Marianas, XXIV Corps had to borrow the Marine's VAC Marine artillery group, which had finally been assembled in Hawaii, to support the Army landings on Leyte. As the VAC Marine artillery group slogged ashore on Leyte in support of the Army infantry of XXIV Corps, the XXIV Corps artillery group remained with the Marine infantry ofVAC in the Marianas. The organizational situation was finally untangled on December 11, 1945, when the XXN Corps Artillery finally arrived on Leytefrom the Marianas and rejoined XXN Corps and the VA C Artillery left Leyte on December 13, 1944 to join the rest of VA C on Guam. On Leyte, XXN Corps, finally united with its artillery group, f inished combat operations there and was transferred to the newly formed US Tenth Army. 36 |
