Show ARTHUR A. A TLE WIN: You got in on the Saipan campaign? ART: Right. WIN: What kind of hip did you go to Saipan in? J 1 200 ART: We went over on the USS Pierce, APA 50. That wa the name of the tran port. [Editor's note: USS Pierce, APA-50, was commissioned in 1943. The Pierce was a Gilliam Class APA (Navy Auxiliary Ship, Personnel, Attack) of the C2-S-B1 Type. The ship had a gross tonnage, fully loaded, of 13,893 tons. The ship was 459 feet, two inches long, with a maximum width of sixty-three feet and a draft of twenty-five feet, nine inches fully loaded. The Pierce was powered by 6000 HP turbine engines, which gave it a top speed of 15.5 knots.] They named the combat transport ships after presidents of the country. The ship we were on, APA-50, was named after President Pierce. WIN: Excuse me. I need to change the sides of the tape, now. ENDOFSIDEA WIN: Okay, Arthur. We have you going from Oahu to Saipan on the USS Pierce. How long did it take to go from Oahu to Saipan? ART: Oh, I think we were on the water for about two weeks. WIN: Did you go in a big convoy? ART: Yes, it was good-sized, yes. WIN: Did you go directly to the staging area for the battle? ART: Let's see, yes. From Oahu, we went right directly to Saipan. That's where we took our first Japanese island. We took it away from the Japs. [Editor's note: Saipan 26 |
