Show ROBERT THAYER '2 02 ROB: I lived on the post. I never was able to have my wifl with m on - well, I did right after; I did come back from overseas. She stayed with me about a we k in Dalhart just before they released me to come home, to get out of the service. You know a lot of them had their wives with them all over, but I didn' t. I was in the Army Air Force- Air Corps at that time- and, boy, the places they put us, you didn't take your wives. But while I was up at Fort Douglas waiting for the appointment, why, Harry Ostler-! don't know whether you knew any of the Ostlers of the Ostler candy; you've heard of Ostler Candy? BEC: Yeah, I've heard of that. ROB: Well, he was a captain up to the Fort; he's been at the reserve at the University-he was a football player and I knew him from playing ball-and he got up a team from the Fort Douglas, and they were playing in the league downtown, so I got on that too. BEC: Is that right? ROB: Yeah. But my orders came before they finished the season (laughs). But I had a good time with that, too. BEC: Yeah. Made the time go by a little nicer. ROB: I'll say. And then it got me off the base. I could always go to the game, and then go see my wife, and then she'd drive me back up to the post. BEC: ROB: BEC: Right. Take the long way back. Yeah, long way back. So you shipped to, you say, Scott Field? 12 |
