Show ROBERT THAYER D B R 20 2 BEC: Right. You told me you were the only child then. That wa an th r question I wanted to ask. ROB: Uh-huh, an only child, that's right-spoiled rotten (laughs). BEC: (laughs) Were you involved in extracurricular activities at East High School, ROTC or drama or any of those things? ROB: No, I was very active in sports when I was young, and through the church, I belonged to the church, and I played basketball, and young men's softball, and later on I played softball down at old White Park, and all over; for many years I played softball. BEC: That was through the church sport program? ROB: Well, at first it was through the church, but later on it became through the urban, the city organization, the municipal leagues they had around town. In fact, I guess about six years ago they called me up and honored me and put me in the Softball Hall of Fame (laughs). I was kind of proud of that. BEC: Yeah, that's cool. What a fun thing. So sports was big for you while you were growing up? ROB: Yes. And all my life, even after, I played golf-not too good-and I bowled-not too good-but I did right up--in fact I golfed last year. At eighty-six I was still golfing, but my legs and hips are giving me fits now. I doubt if I can make it this year (laughs). BEC: Oh. That's amazing, though, that you were even up to last year getting out on the links and playing. 4 |
