Show going to get married after I got out of the service and I w nt back to ta v ith hi Jk and meet him and he was still in the service· he hadn t got out yet. Th y li din Harrisburg. He was on leave so I seen him when he was there and he had to 1 av which he did, in the plane, and the plane crashed and he got killed. BEC: Oh, how terrible. DEL: So I came back home and married Walt later and his mom and dad used to write to me all the time. In fact, when Walt and I got married, they called and said they were coming through this way and wanted to know if my husband would care if they come and see me because they felt like I was their daughter. So Walt says, "Sure, come over. We'd love to have you." So, he met them and they were real nice. And they said, "Well, we sure like your husband and glad you married well." So I kept in contact with them till they both died. BEC: That's sad. Was that man somebody you met in San Francisco? DEL: Yeah, and used to dance with all the time. He was a real good jitterbug dancer (laughs). Yeah, I used to date him all the time after a while, I guess about six months before I got out. And I got out in 1946. It was a fun, fun time. BEC: I imagine, though, that having come from Salina, and then even Salt Lake, even a bigger city than Salina, and then going to New York with all these people from all over the world, were you a little bit shell shocked, a little bit culture shocked? DEL: I'll tell you, I was so fascinated with everything, it just, AAHHHH. The one thing they used to tease me about, coming from a small town, and they used to always ask me, I'd say, let's go get some "cam" on the cob and "harse" instead of "horse." 20 |
