R 0 u T E s F R 0 M INDIAN A p 0 LIs, I A I REMARKS.-Tnrlianapolis is the grand centre of a very extensive sys. tern of internal communication, and which, on its completion, will connect her either directly or indirectly with the most important places in the Eastern , as ·well as the Western States. For this she is in a great measure indebted to h er geographical po"'ition, b ·ng situatetl in the centre of the State of which she is the capital. (lly refe rring to the Map this will be made more apparent.) Indianapolis is, also, on the great high road from the East, via Pitts burg and Wheeling, to St. Louis, and will hecome more closely connected with the great marts of trade, by the construction of the Indianapolis and Bellefontaine Railroad, which, at the latter place, will unite with the Ohio and Pennsylvania Railroad. These wi II iu te rsect, in thci r course, the various routes pervading the growing State of Ohio, which are destined to be numerous. Its route will be nearly central, and will connect with routes to Philadelphia, via Pittsburg; to Baltimore, via Wheeling and Cumberland; to New York, via the New York and Erie Railroad; and to Boston, via fluft1llo anrl AI hany. Rai I roads constrncted, and others in progress, diverge from h er in a southerly direction to the Ohio River, in a westerly, to Illinois and St. Louis; and in a north and north-westerly direction to important places on the Wabash, which will in due time be continuer! to Lake Michigan, Chicag-o, a111l Northern Illinois. The first great link, frorn Indianapolis to T erre Haute, which is to counect her with St. Louis, by a continuation of this road across the State of Illinois, via Vandalia is now being constructed, and through this, at no distant day perhaps with the great Pacific Railroad. R., running to Shelbyville, 16 miles, at which place it connects with the Rnslwitle Late1·al Branc!t R. R., running to Rusltville, a distance of 20 mi los. At Shelby ville, also, the Knightstown and ShelbyviLle R. R. uni tcs with the precedi ug ones: it runs to Kni~htstown, 27 miles. The Martinsville R. R. connects with the Madison and Indianapoli~ road, about three miles north of Ediu burg, and runs thence to Martinsville, a distance of 29 miles. This road wiJI, probably, be opened for travel in July. _ t Columbus will IJe the place of intersection for the J p.jj'crsonvillc and Colnmbus R.R., extending from Jeffersonville, on tho Ohio, to Columbus, 66 miles. This road is in progress and a portion of its southern end open for travel. 11* The Columbus, NashvilLe and Bloomin![ton R.R. , is, a lso, designed to connect with the Madison and Indianapolis r oad, at Columbus; it will extend westward from the lat ter place , through Nashville to Bloomington, a distance of about 40 miles.
