"For the time being you will be assigned this one table here," He led her to a spot near the back wall of the room. "You will notice it is already set as it should be. Please study the arrangement of everything so that you can duplicate it." He turned abruptly and left Nettie standing by the table pondering the array of plates, silver and other accoutrements, some of which she had never seen before. Guests began coming into the dining room. Nettie held her breath when a gentleman sat at her table. She stood uncertainly to one side. She had no idea what to do. "Well, get me some coffee, girl," the man said eventually, and thankful for something to do, Nettie breathed "yes, sir," and scurried off to find the kitchen. She watched as the other girls disappeared into a certain door off the dining room. Nettie walked confidently to the door and into the kitchen. It was a bustle of activity, but well-ordered. Everyone seemed to know exactly what to do and where to go. Nettie paused once again, not exactly sure what she should do next. A voice quite close to her ear startled her. "I'm Rose. You follow me and do just what I do." Nettie gulped, nodded and fell into place behind Rose. Matching even her footsteps to Rose's Nettie duplicated her every action. When she had a small tray loaded with a hot cup of coffee, cream and sugar, she followed Rose out of the kitchen. Rose turned, and nodded, then |
