Show Nettie, Page 34 fire was to begin and went immediately to greet his mother. Nettie spotted him riding in and was instantly filled with curiosity about his trip. She could hardly wait for campfire to begin to question William about his story. After the evening meal was cleaned up, Nettie ran to find the Taggart girls. "Have you talked with William yet?" Nettie asked Becky. "No, but I expect my pa will ask him to tell us about his trip at campfire." Becky was right. The Saints soon gathered together, grateful for the rest after the long day. And after the usual prayer, singing and settling of minor business matters, George Taggart spoke to William. "We'd all be interested to hear how you fared in your errand, William." He stood and smiled self-consciously. All eyes turned toward him and the crowd was quiet as he began. " After Sis. Welch and Bro. Passey left me at the railroad depot at Kemmerer, I went in to buy tickets for the ride to Evanston. The agent there told me I had to have a certificate saying that Diena had no contagious disease and saying what she died of. Well, I was really worried. I had no idea how I could get such a certificate. I knew no one in town and the train was due to leave in thirty minutes. Not knowing where else to turn, I walked to the back of the depot and prayed to be shown what to do. I really prayed hard, brothers and sisters. I guess I've never felt the need so badly." Heads nodded as the group approved William's decision. |
