Read, the historian of White Pine County, Nevada, sent me a photograph of this once prominent landmark near Ely which she entitles "General Deterioration Through the Years." Mrs. Read contends that the rock was greatly reduced in size when the road bed was elevated in 1932, burying the base, and by "general deterioration with elements, children playing, guns used as target practice, etc." The rock had been a favorite picnic spot from the 1870s through the early 1900s when a nearby spring was covered over to make way for the road bed up Murry Canyon. 17.
