Show 124 desired sanctuary within two weeks. Upon his a r r i v a l a t Cedar Springs, Bean found the Iron County companies waiting for him. He was somewhat surprised t o find the men from so far south. The Parowan company consisted of twelve men under the leadership of Orson B. Adams. The New York State n a t i v e was f o r t y - t h r e e years old at the time of this c a l l . He had been through the persecutions in Nauvoo, and was a veteran of the famed Mormon B a t t a l i o n during the war with Mexico. Adams was an original pioneer of Pawowan i n 1851, and had served as an o f f i c e r in the Legion. Currently, he was serving as f i r s t counsellor t o Bishop Tarleton Lewis. Also conspicuous among the twelve Parowan men was Urban Van Stewart, a pioneer of 18^7, formerly of Tennessee. Stewart was a l s o a member of the Nauvoo Legion. The company had departed Parowan on March 26. The Cedar City contingent, consisting of sixteen men, was led by Charles C. Hopkins who, l i k e Adams, was a former member of the Mormon Battalion. He was presently serving in one of the Cedar companies of the Legion and was 17 alleged to have had a hand in the massacre a t Mountain Meadows during the f a l l. Also among the Cedar b r e t h r e n was John Woodhouse who had r e c e n t l y been involved with the so-called " S a l t p e t r e Mission," t o make gunpowder for the Mormon troops. Brigham Young's l e t t e r of February 23, which ordered the exploration of the White Mountains, did not reach President Haight at Cedar City u n t i l March 10 having gone out in the Deseret mail r a t h e r than by e x p r e s s . 1 " On the 24th, Haight was able to report back t o Young t h a t the company was f u l l y organized and on t h e ir way. The men had s t a r t e d for the rendezvous on March 2 1 . He mentioned that four members of the p a r t y were men r e t u r n i n g from San Bernardino who were on their way t o Lehi, but t h e i r stopover at Cedar City won them a t r i p t o the White Mountains. Haight a l s o reported that Apostle Lyman had arrived in Cedar City and intended on s t a r t i n g for the Colorado on the 29th. 19 |
