Show GZU^RAL COl-U.JbTTARY OL-7 CLASS A-£-AOb-rMCTIOl-T BOOK The manuscripts that ;;cre submitted this year in the non-fiction book category '..'ore trencncouoly varied in both type and quality. Actually more varied in type than in quality. There were not very many contenders for first place. A number of the entries were rat'rer well 'ritten, but clearly had been done some years ago as a Master's thesis or a Doctoral dissertation, and had not gone through the process of becoming a book aimed at a wider readership than just the committee. (The first-place manuscript came from material used in a dissertation, but had clearly been re-conceived as a hook. ) Example:-, of manuscripts not so re-conceived were a thesis on the South African Press and a history of the Salt Lake Post Office. A history of the talker Bank was well researched and well written, but again had not been approached as a book for a more general readership. A similar problem existed in a manuscript-on Monastic practices. In spite of the fact that this was not the year for biographies, some surfaced, generally personal spiritual autobiographies, such as "A Delightful Journey," and "My Second Estate." A rather interesting investigation into a skyjacking was submitted, but i*r. shared the same fault as the dissertations- it did not develop a focus that would help a reader get through all the material feeling that he's really got a handle on something interesting. In many of the manuscripts too much of the work of sorting and focusing and interpreting was left to the reader. |
