D., Awarded the North American Neuro- Ophthalmology Society Young Investigator Award Leonard A. Levin, M. D., Ph. D., was honored with the first Young Investigator Award of the North American Neuro- Ophthalmology Society at the Society's 23rd annual meeting in Keystone, CO, on February 12, 1997. The North American Neuro- Ophthalmology Society represents over 300 neuro- ophthalmologists worldwide, who specialize in the diagnosis and treatment of disorders involving both the nervous system and the eyes. The Young Investigator Award is given to members in recognition of the body of work they have performed as neuro- ophthalmic investigators during the five years following completion of their fellowship training, and on the basis of a scientific manuscript. Dr. Levin's research, " Induction of Gene Expression after Retinal Ganglion Cell Anatomy," showed that a protein previously known only to be in the liver was produced in the retina as a response to injury of the optic nerve. He demonstrated that this appears to be an effort of the retinal cells to save themselves. Future studies of this type may lead to ways of rescuing an eye whose optic nerve has been injured. Dr. Levin is an Assistant Professor of Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences, Division of Neurology and Neurological Surgery, at the University of Wisconsin Medical School, Madison, WI. 222 |
