Show Initial development was centered at Wahweap where installation of facilities has barely been able to keep up with the increasing number of visitors. A 40-unit motel and restaurant were constructed in 1966, along with road improvements and a 60-site campground. At Bullfrog Basin, western access to the lake, a campground, picnic area, and boat-launching ramp have been installed. An increase in visitation to Bullfrog and Halls Crossing, access point from the east, is expected when the roads leading into these areas are completed. The State of Utah has received a Federal grant to build a paved highway into Bullfrog Basin, and plans are underway to begin work on the road immediately. Rainbow Bridge National Monument A floating marina has been installed in the Aztec Creek Arm of Lake Powell on the route to Rainbow Bridge National Monument. This spectacular natural rock bridge has increased in popularity now that visitors can boat to within approximately one mile of it. From 1909 to 1923, a period of 14 years, only 296 hardy individuals visited Rainbow Bridge. 1955 was the first year that visitation reached 1,000 annually. From 1909 to 1962 a total of 23,890 vacationers visited Rainbow Bridge, while in 1966 it is estimated that visitation will be well over 20,000. By the end of September 1966 17,991 visitors had already been recorded. Visitor Center The Glen Canyon Dam Visitor Center, being constructed by the Bureau of Reclamation, will be operated jointly by the Bureau of Reclamation and the National Park Service. This beautiful center overlooks the dam, powerplant, and reservoir. Exhibits are being prepared for the center, scheduled to be opened in 1967. A self-guided tour through Glen Canyon Dam and powerplant will be provided to the public from the new Visitor Center. Fishing The Arizona and Utah State Game and Fish Departments, working together with the Bureau of Sport Fisheries and Wildlife, have planted a total of 16,300,000 fish in Lake Powell. The species that have been planted to date are Largemouth Bass, Rainbow Trout, Kamloop Trout, Kokanee Salmon, and Black Crappie. 2.
