Show By June 25, 1878, he and his assistant had finished folding and with needles and thread, sewing the printed pages together and on the following day started mailing and otherwise distributing the first issue of the nPlan of Salvationtt Tracto On July 2, 1878, he mailed many Tracts to various Elders in the Southern States and on the morning of July 6th started, at daybreak, to walk back to Haywood Valley. And so was born this Tract, which during the intervening years, has been a very important factor in the presentation of the Gospel to the peoples of the world. It was the first of its kind used in missionary work in the United States; the standard works of the Church and the writings of Orson Pratt and others being used almost exclusively up to that time. Its publication was paid for by its author. Its distribution was general several weeks before Church Authorities knew of its existence. In a letter to Elder Morgan from President John Taylor, dated July 19, 1878, President Taylor in a postscript stated that he "would like a copy of the tract you have lately published." And so an epistle was written; a tract was born, and a new method inaugurated for the presentation of the restored gospel of Jesus Christ to the peoples of the world. Since the day of its first publication, it has been one of the most sought for and the most effective instruments in the hands of the Elders of the Church in bringing to the attention of the children of men the principles of the Gospel in the great Plan of Salvation. Millions of copies have been published and distributed in many languages and in all parts of the world where the Gospel has been preached. -4- |
