Show I 'I ., A MIRACULOUS ADMINISTRATION ln the year 1880, Pre sid.ent John Morgan traveled extensively through the states of Virginia and North and South Carolina. holding conferences in . the v~arioue branches of the church as in those states established. As a travelh1g companion President Morgari had Elder Matthias F . Cowley, a former pupil and beloved friend. As a boy, Elder Cowley had attended the Morgan College in Salt Lake City and had been under the tutorship o£ Presi-dent Morgan; and from those early days a devoted and enduring friendship had existed between the two. President Morgan had had Elder Cowley called on his first mission and had been the one who set him a. part for hi a ministry . In writing the Deseret N·ews from Sontag , Virginia, on March 4, 1880, President Morgan wrote as follows : "At \¥y-thville , Virginia, I had to separate from my young traveling com-panion, Brother Matthias F . Cowley, who has proved a most successful elder , and who has gained an influence in the midst of the people quite re-markable £or one so young and' inexperienced. Our journeying together through the mountains of Virginia and North Carolina will always be remembered as days of pleasure and great enjoyment. " This friendship endured thrQgghout the years and until the death of Pres-ident Morg.an on Augllst 14, 1894 ~· · During his final illne s s , Elder Cowley was his constant attendant., ministering ·unto him during his waking hou:rs in the long hours of both days and nights .
