Show LATEST LOCAL CD RELEASES by Carla Eskelsen RUNNING MichaelWaterman If it's true that you have to learn to walk before you can run, singersongwriter Michael Waterman is going by the rules. Running (April1996) is Waterman's sophomore release; his first album, Walking Alone (January 1994) began as a sixsong demo and grew into a ten-song album that was locally well-received, including airplay on KRCL 91FM and The Mountain 105.7. Subtle elements of rock and country shade Waterman's mostly-folk style. The new album contains eleven songs, including nine tight originals and nice arrangements of two great folk anthems-Bob Dylan's "I Shall Be Released" and Cliff Eberhard's "The Long Road." Already a veteran writer of over 120 songs, Waterman draws from emotions and experiences of everyday life, usually telling a story that rings true, and touches the heart without being maudlin. The players consist of Michael on acoustic guitar, harmonica and vocals; Phil Howland on bass guitar and vocals; Steve Lemmon (of Ali Ali Oxen Free) on electric and acoustic guitars and vocals, as well as co-producing; and Brad Zaba on rhythms, drums and percussion. Michael is joined in this effort by special guests, award-winning songwriter Nancy Hanson on background vocals; recording artist David Talk on piano and Hammond organ; and accomplished bluegrasser Ryan Shupe (of Salt Licks) on fiddle and mandolin. Perhaps it is a reflection of the balance evident in Michael's life that comes most strongly through his music. The difficulties of making a living in the performing songwriter genre are well-known. "Don't give up your day job" is the common cry, but it's also a common fact of life. Waterman has come up with an interesting and satisfying We do all the work, and all the elax! "Dayjob" finds Waterman at KUED TV, channel 7, working to raise funds for the PBS affiliate at University of Utah. (Waterman recently scored a KUED TV special, "Remembering Uncle Golden," based on the life of Utah native, J. Golden Kimball.) He's also currently working towards finishing his master's degree in Mass Communications, with a special emphasis on popular culture, including a thesis on how new radio formats emerged during the 1980s and their influence on contemporary music. Michael's hopes are that this Master's degree, along with his professional performance work, including a stint as Artist- in-Residence with Fremont Elementary School will give him the credentials to serve as an adjunct professor, perhaps teaching a class with a focus on Rock & Roll and Social Theory. Michael Waterman will be appearing in several local performances this month- on the 8th at Blockbuster Music, SLC, the 11th at Marriott Center for Dance and the 16th at SL Arts Centersee the Calendar of Events for details.
