Special guest Jen Exten will open the show. Bill Stainee;: Started playing on weekends & nights while working for Sears in the RA4WD01P 1"oll~ l-8SfJ--r~2..-0<l61 Ptovo o.f'e.o. 762.-0C}" [ Boston area in the early 60's. Initially, he covered songs of other artists. In time he found the need to develop and express his own ideas and styles, so he began to write his own songs. He soon progressed to the admirable level of full time musician. Bill plays the guitar upside down and left handed. I guess here in Salt Lake City, we've all watched Jay Toups play left handed, which looks back- ·-o;;% wards enough, but this is dif- ~· ferent. It is some sort of trick that Bill Staines does with mirrors. It really can't be done. Bill has acquired mastery in the elusive arena of guitarist singersongwriter. His warm and friendly baritone voice augments a very clever and touching lyrical style. His portraits of life and songs of the road typify his style and have inspired dozens of songwriters and poets. Hailing from New Hampshire, he will be traveling through the US this fall making his annual stop in Utah. He has been a frequent guest on Public Radio's "A Prairie Home Companion", "A Mountain Stage", and "The Good Evening Radio Show". Bill's latest Red House release Looking for the Wind heads the list of over 20 albums over the last 30 years. Listen real close & you can hear the yodel from here. BILL MONROE (CONT.) Many times he would be singing "The Wayfaring Stranger." As the song progressed, he'd pick up power and urgency and by the time he'd reach the part about "I'll soon be free from all my trials ... " I just knew I would surely freeze to death right there in my chair before he ever finished the song. Bill once told me that he especially liked that last verse of The Wayfaring Stranger. The presence, the conviction were awesome. He was ready. Will anyone ever approach the raw strength of Bill Monroe? I think not. I rejoice in the knowledge that The Angel Band has a new leader! --Mary Yeomans |
