Show MICHAEL LUCARELLI NEW CD RELEASE, RECITAL OCTOBER 5 Salt Lake's own Michael Lucarelli has just released his second CD recording. This one is entitled Collage. The press release says it is intended as a follow- up to his 1994 disc, Inpira~ao .. Don't believe everything you read in press releases! Inpira~ao was a p retty good first attempt, but I could never listen to it all the way through without a sense of unease. Michael's performance on that disc was raw and intense, ebullient, passionate, and in many ways just plain overthe- top. Some of his musical decisions were questionable in my mind, although his virtuosity was not. With Collage, Michael has settled down and (to my biased ears) seems to be thinking more of the musical line and phrasing instead of just warp-speed pyrotechnics. He hasn' t lost his chops any; it's just that they are placed at the service of the music-which is 100% correct-rather than the other way around. He shows a wider range of repertoire here, with 13 tracks going non-chronologically from 1538 vihuela maestro Luys Narvaez to modern New Age artist Enya. In between, we have Bach, Beethoven, Sor, Gershwin and several others. Andrew York's fine composition "Andecy" gets a nice reading, as does Jack Duarte's jazzy homage to Wes Montgomery, "Sua Cosa." Lucarelli's own piece "Green Light" is described in the liner notes as "a relentless high-energy composition of discordant harmonies and pulsating rhythms, reflecting the state of our world today." 'Nuff said, but he plays it convincingly. My one bellyache about this production is with the liner notes. There are a few typos and grammatically incorrect sentence structures, which in our era of SpellCheck and GrammarCheck p rograms just isn't acceptable. (NOTE: I hope to high heavens that th is article gets th oroughly checked before publication !!) Lucarelli will p lay many of these works in recital on October 5th at the SLC First Presbyterian Ch urch, South Temple at C Street. Curtain is at 7:30pm. No ticket prices were given in the information packet I received, but you can probably get tickets at the usual SLC lAMA outlets.
