Show Dr. Aziz S. Atiya 11L Sharia Wadi el-Nil Maadi, Cairo, Egypt Dear Dr. Atiya: There has been much rejoicing on this campus since the officers and instructors have been notified that we shall have the honor and pleasure of having you with us next year. As you requested, I have been in touch with Dr. Lam since my return, and even in Cairo attempted to contact Mr. Downfcr of the U. S. Educational Foundation office. Unfortunately I was unable to reach him personally but sent a letter to him. Just at this moment a letter from Mr. Downar arrived with the news (of which you must already have been apprised) that the Egyptian Board of Directors voted to continue its policy of approving Pulbright awards only for those candidates who have never had the opportunity to study, teach, or visit in the United States. I shall immediately pass this information on to Professor Miller. Dean Charles Odegaard and Professor Boak, who, as you know, have been vitally interested in obtaining your services.for the year, have been most cooperative. Also since my return, I have written Professor Miller for further information regarding the manner of payment of the stipend to you. As soon as I receive replies to my inquiries, I shall inform you. In the meantime, I regret that there is the necessity of asking you to fill out the enclosed form, so that the appointment can be recognized through official channels, which means securing the approval of the Executive Committees of the Literary College and of the Graduate School and of the Board of Regents of the University. Please do not attempt to insure the neatness of this form, for we shall be happy to have it retyped here when we have the data. You may wish to attach to the enclosed form separate sheets so that there will appear no gaps in the year-to-year appointments and positions held by you since the time when you began your graduate work and proceeding to and through that teaching which has made you so famous throughout the world today. I regret the length of the form, but I am sure you understand how important it is that we have complete data regarding your educational and professional experience. I feel confident that by the time you arrive, I shall have been able to secure adequate living quarters for you and your charming family. It was for me a most rewarding experience to see and be with you for even such a short time, and we are all agreed that having you here with us for a year will be profitable from every point of view. Since I was privileged to see something of your library and the almost fabulous manuscript collection, I have been tempted to revise ray UNIVERSITY OF MICHIGAN DEPARTMENT OF NEAR EASTERN STUDIES ANN ARBOR.
