Show m .'?iisS'i Si UNIVERSITY THEATRE Ow 6^ (Q7w€et ^Z/md "Sing Out, Sweet Land," a musical comedy rich in American Folk songs, highlighted the fall season of the University Theatre. Written by Walter Kerr, the play starred numerous students and faculty members and featured a variety of dances performed by the Orchesis dance group. Barnaby Goodchild captured the audience with his vocal meanderings through American Folk lore. Novelty numbers added their spark to this holiday production. They included: Frankie and Johnny Were Lovers, and Maxie's Speakeasy.. "Sing Out, Sweet Land" with its dance and song offered all a colorful perspective of holiday enjoyment. The very old Puritan life was treated in a very modern manner by dancers in "Sing Out, Sweet Land." (Jk (p/fuham&i (Qfiuk Offering one of the most exciting Christmas programs ever performed was the University Theatre's "Nutcracker Suite." Combining the talents of Maurice Abravanel, the Utah Symphony Orchestra and Willam Christensen, the Theatre offered possibly its most stimulating performance. Guest stars Sally Bailey and Conrad Ludlow of the San Francisco Ballet were featured as the Sugar Plum Fairy and her Cavalier. The Utah Symphony made music history as they were the first full symphony orchestra in the United States to play for a full length production of "The Nutcracker Ballet." Scenery from the San Francisco Ballet offered a final professional touch to "The Nutcracker." 100 |
