Show itAPRIL 15.-The Student Body assembled early for the annual whitewashing bee, and on reaching the "U" found the reservoir had been drained, necessitating a delay-however the whitewashing was finished sooner than usual. Berta McCanne "did herself proud" in her management of the lunch, and was greeted with a burst of appreciation from the ravenous and lime-stained daubers. A unique feature of the afternoon entertainment "was the Japanese fencing contest, and the day was closed by a jolly matinee dance in the gym.MAY 2.-A fairyland of apple blossoms formed a dainty setting for the May Day Fete. Many novel surprises-the cotillion, prizes, classic dances, and tea garden-kept interest at a high tension and heightened the enjoyment.MAY 9.-A devastating fire visited the Campus, doing damage estimated at about seven thousand dollars. The flames gained great headway before they could be controlled and completely destroyed the Foundry.MAY 21.-From the long line formed before the Utonian booth, came echoes of eager anticipation and impatience-but in the little groups on the lawn, already in possession of the new '14 Year Book, were only smiling faces and exclamations of pleasure.MAY 23-25.-The rendering of Handel's masterpiece, the "Messiah," by the University Musical Society, with the assistance of four talented soloists, won the enthusiastic praise of several appreciative audiences and brought well deserved success to Professor Coop and his corps of workers.MAY 23 to JUNE 2.-A sylvan glade so shadowy, weird and beautiful as to transport all beholders to the realm of fairies, forms a picturesque setting for a dreamland play. Enchanting strains of Mendelssohn, as though from a myriad of elfin pipes, contribute the rippling of brooks and the songs of birds. Amid such scenic effects, the presentation of a Midsummer Night's Dream, by the Utah Dramatic Club, came as the final artistic triumph of the year.Commencement WeekSUNDAY.-Baccalaureate Sermon by Hon. THURSDAY.-Field Day at Saltair.JUNE 16 to AUGUST 1.-The Summer School of 1913 was very successful, both from the viewpoint of the amount of work done and the number of students attending. Many of the prominent educators of the country, called here by the N. E. A., joined the force of instructors, thereby giving exceptional advantages to the students. Several new courses conducted, proved very popular.194 |
