Show BaseballCOACH BOB PORTER opened his third year as director of Utah baseball with eight letter-men in suits. The 1913 baseball team was the best Utah has ever had, and under the able guidance of Coach Porter won the third consecutive state interscholastic championship. The infield was intact from the previous year and displayed considerable knowledge of inside baseball. An abundance of good material made the filling of the two vacant positions somewhat easy.It was the biggest year in Utah baseball, for relations were established with six Colorado teams and Utah made an important factor in Rocky Mountain Conference baseball. Any team that breaks even away from home is playing real ball. Utah played six different teams in as many days, winning the first three by close scores and losing the last three. Each Colorado team had its star pitcher ready for Utah, while Coach Porter was forced to use his entire staff. Team members said that had the schedule been reversed the result would have been the same.Utah opened its schedule with a practice game against the fast Salt Lake Union Association team and lost by a 15 to 5 score. Utah duplicated this score against the "Saints" and shut out the Salt Lake High. The collegiate games were close and interesting. Provo defeated Utah for the first time in baseball because of loose playing at critical times by Utah. Early season state games were one sided, the "Aggies" losing 14 to 5 and the B. Y. C. 11 to 2. The first Provo game was a 5-4 score for Utah but a slump was developing fast. Utah was on the slide a few days later, for the second Provo game was lost 7 to 1. The final game was important, for the collegiate pennant depended upon it. Utah came back and played brilliant ball against the "Aggies" who, under the pitching of Schweitzer was expected to trim Utah. Fred Stack pitched tight ball up to the last inning when the infield weakened and four "Aggies" scored, making the score six all. In the last half of the ninth "Happy" Holmstead walked and took second on Tommy Fitzpatrick's long sacrifice. Stack out and Lon Romney at the bat with two down and two strikes. Lon retrieved his error that allowed the "Aggies" to tie the score and sent Schweitzer's third offering over the fence for a home run.April 17..U 5-Salt Lake League 15.April 19..
