Show I1UTAH Resume of the Season WITH eight of last year's letter men back, two members of the famous world's championship team of 1916 again in school and a host of last year's Freshmen eligible for positions on the team, hopes for another championship ran high. Never before had a university such a remarkable array of talent to choose from at the beginning of a season. The damper of all hopes came, however, when the influenza epidemic again put a stop to all activities, and sports were no exception. The ban lasted just long enough to prohibit all the inter-collegiate games scheduled for the season. During the time that the basketball followers were waiting for the ban to lift, Coach Fitzpatrick kept his squad going through their daily practice maneuvers, so that when the offer to attend the national tournament was made, every man on the team was in condition for the big affair. The students and fans were not kept from seeing the team in action on our own grounds, and before they left for the tournament, two games were staged in the Deseret gymnasium. The first of the post-season practice games brought together the Lehi American Legion and the Utah quints. Utah was an easy victor in this contest, the score resulting 37 to 26. In the practice game with the B. Y. U., on the eve before leaving for the tournament, Utah again was victorious with a 41 to 30 final count. At the national tournament, held at Atlanta, Georgia, Utah won the first game with the Charlotte "Y" team, the score being 61 to 20. The second tournament game with the Rutgers College team was a hard fought affair, resulting in a 35 to 32 victory for Rutgers. Rutgers College lost the national title to the New York University team in the final game of the tournament. Pa&e 237 |
