SIR: In compliance with your instrnotions, I have the honor to submit my annual report for the fiscal year ending June 30,1897. Thereme three reservations under the jurisdiction of this agency, namely, the Culville and Spokane in Washington, and the Coeur d'Al4ne in Idaho. The country comprising the Colville and Spokane reservations is rough and moun-tainous in character, and very little of it can be utilized for agricultural purposes. Colville lie? in the north-central part of the State of Washington, and contains, by estimahon, about 3,000,000 acres, or about 5,600 square miles. The Spokane lies east of Colville and north of the Spokane River, and has an area of about 150,000 acres, or 240 square mlles. The Coeur d'AI4ne Reservation is located in the northern part of the State of Idaho, and has an area of something over400,OOO acres, or about 700 square miles. The soil is very productive, and nearly all of it can be utilized for agricultural purposes. 0ensos.-The census just taken shows a total population of 3,393 on the three reservations, of whom abont 10 er cent are mixed bloods. This is an increase over the year previous of 885, angis accounted for in the fact that a more care-ful census was taken, andwe obtained s count of people who have heretofore been estimated. There are eleven different tribes or bands of Indians residing on the three res-ervations, and in addition, the Kalispells, numbering some 150 or 160, and not on |
