Show In addition to the 20,000,000 to bo out under the provisions of the act, the Msnom-oness may out the topa and butts into shingle bolts, but no timber that will make a merchantable eaw log is allowed to be cut into said shingle bolts. As there have been many abuses of these privileges granted the Menomonees, it is expeoted that you and the superintendent of logging will carefully watch them all the time while they are at work, and see that there is no deviation from the rules h i d d a m in this Department letter. As will be understood by the foregoing, the logging prospect was not 1 so good this season as formerly, but I was determined to prevent wasteful cutting in future, and I hoped that under the care of the new / agent and a new superintendent of logging-a superintendent having been appointed who was highly recommended as a practical and reli-able man-such good work would be accomplished that the Indiana would be satisfied. Under these instructions the agent and logging superintendent made sevent,y-two contracts with the loggers at prices ranging from $4 to $6. Under the circumstances in which the logging had to be carried on, it was not expected that the entire 20,000,000 feet allowed by the act could be banked, wblch proved true, as only about 14,000,000 feet were banked. February 7,1894, Agent Savage requested authority to advertise \ the logs for sale. This was earlier in the season than usual, but he explained t,hat he believed early sales would secure better prices. This 4 request was submitted to the Department, and February 26,1894, the following authority was received: In oornpliitnoe with the recommendation eontdnedin your communication of24th instant, authority is hereby granted for the &gent of the Green Bay Agency, Wis., to publish an advertisement, as par the form herewith returned, in the weekly edi-tions of the Bhawano Collnty Adrooate, Enquirer, of Ocanto, the Advocate, of Green Bay, Wis., two times in the regular issues suoosedingthe date of the receipt of this advertisement, and for six dsya from date of receipt of this advertisement, aovering six oonsecutive insertions in the daily editions of the Oshkosh Timea, of Oshkosh, Wis., in-riting sealed bids for about 13,280,000 feet of pine logs cut on said resematian by Menomanee Indi%ns during the season 189S194, under the pro-visions of tho set of June 12,1890 (26 State., 146), to be opened in the presence of the bidders in the office of the Green Bay Asenay, at Keshena, Wis., at 2 o'clook p.m., March 15, 1894.
