They were freed two weeks later in time for the Sun Dance.21 The hopes of the True Utes were the hopes of most of the People. The People hoped to regain land and resources, to become economically and politically independent, and to hold on to traditional Ute values. Many of the People used education, technology, and even government systems to rebuild their culture and society. For all the Ute People these hopes have grown out of their history. It is a history notjust of deceptions and sorrows, but also of changes and successes.
